「세월에 따라 성장하는 나무처럼」캐나다 최고의 명문대학교인 토론토대학교의 도서관을 소개해 드립니다.

 

  토론토대학교(University of Toronto)는 캐나다 온타리오 주 토론토에 있는 공립대학교로 1827년 영국 국왕에 의해 킹스칼리지란 이름으로 최초 설립되었으나 1851년 종교적·정치적 논쟁으로 비종파 학교가 되면서 토론토대학으로 학교명을 변경하게 된다. 1923년 노벨의학상을 받은 프레더릭 밴팅(Frederick Banting)을 비롯한 총 18명의 캐나다 출신 노벨상 수상자 절반 이상이 토론토대학교 졸업자로 캐나다 최고의 대학교로 평가되고 있다. 이를 반영하듯 캐다나 전역에서 제일 많은 기부금을 받는 대학교이기도 하다.

  토론토대학교 도서관은 북미에서 하버드대학교와 예일대학교 다음으로 많은 장서를 보유하고 있다. St. George, Mississauga, Scarborough 3개의 캠퍼스에 총 44개 도서관에서는 다양한 컬렉션과 전문도서관, 정보센터 등을 통하여 168개의 학부프로그램, 600개 이상 대학원 프로그램 그리고 42개의 전문프로그램의 교육과 연구 지원을 실시하고 있다. 128개 언어의 1,200만권의 장서, 10만여 건의 연속간행물, 66만 건의 전자저널, 85만 건의 전자책, 1,100여건의 온라인신문 색인 등을 제공하고 있으며 매해 10만여 권의 장서가 수집되어지고 있다.

  도서관 서비스로서는 교수전담 코디네이터를 두어 리에종 서비스를 하고 있으며 연구 주제별 가이드를 제공하고 있어 해당 주제별로 분류된 도서관 검색창과 주제 포털로 바로 연결 가능하게 하여 이용자로 하여금 원하는 정보에 쉽게 접근할 수 있도록 하였다.

 

  홈페이지에서는 도서관에서 제공하는 워크샵에 대한 내용과 분실물에 대한 안내, 그리고 어플로 제공되는 웹 DB에 대한 내용도 함께 보여주고 있다.

토론토 대학도서관은 도서관이 어떤 계획을 가지고 발전해야 하는지에 대해서 늘 관심을 가지고 귀 기울이고 있다. 또한 다양한 의견들을 수렴하여 기간을 정하고 장기플랜을 만들어 실행하며 도서관의 미래를 그려나가고 있다. 늘 발전하는 토론토 대학도서관은 앞으로도 북미를 대표하는 도서관으로 자리매김 할 것이다.
